Miller Heiman Releases European Sales Best Practices Study Results




Miller Heiman has announced the European results of the 2009 Miller Heiman Sales Best Practices Study. Nearly 600 sales professionals participated from Europe in this global study of sales best practices.


European participation grew by 80 percent in this year’s study, which allows Miller Heiman to share country-specific results with sales leaders in more geographical areas than ever before.
 
The Miller Heiman Sales Best Practices Study analyses complex, business-to-business sales environments to reveal the best practices of World-Class Sales Organisations and the perception gaps among sales representatives, their managers, and senior level executives. The study also looks at year-over-year trends, making it possible to highlight the activities that are particularly relevant in the current selling environment.


One of the study’s notable findings was that the European respondents were more likely to report the need to discount in order to win business, but were less likely to seek comparable value in exchange. In the study, 20 percent of respondents agreed that they regularly need to discount to win business, compared to 12 percent of respondents from World-Class Sales Organisations. Only 19 percent of the European participants agreed that they get comparable value in return for discounts.

The largest representation of European participants came from France, German, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Changes in budget are likely to significantly affect those earning £100k plus

The Chancellor used his recent Budget to introduce sweeping changes to the tax system that could have a significant impact on high earners and the way business owners remunerate themselves.


All those earning over £100,000 net no longer have a personal allowance (tax-free pay).   The allowance reduces at a rate of £1 for every £2 of income above the £100k threshold – an effective marginal tax rate of 60%!  This is even higher than the well publicised increased higher rate – 50% for earnings above £150,000 – which will also take effect from April 2010.

Pension planning can help – contributions to pensions may reduce net income so  saving 60% tax on earnings above £100,000.  But after April 2011 anyone earning over £150,000 will no longer have higher rate tax relief on personal pension contributions.  Business owners have often used pension contributions as a means of extracting profits from their businesses in a tax efficient manner  -  this rule change means many high earners will have to rethink their strategy.

Although the new rules are to be introduced from 2011, immediate interim rules to discourage individuals affected by the rule changes from boosting their pension funds prior to 2011 were unveiled at the same time.  Any payment in excess of £20,000 could result in an additional personal tax charge of 20% (the £20,000 limit is a combination of personal and company contributions.)

These interim rules are extremely complex and it is important for those with total earnings in excess of £150,000 to immediately review their pension provision as payment of contributions by a company or individual could result in an inadvertent increase in their tax bill.

There is a bit of good news - ISAs do not attract any tax relief on contributions but there is no tax to pay when they’re encashed, and the annual limit for contributions has increased to £10,200.  If you are 50 or over in the current tax year, you can take advantage of the increase on 6 October 2009.  Others have to wait until 6 April 2010 to take advantage of the increase.
